Research residency in digital arts in Quebec City

Residency in Quebec City (Quebec – Canada) hosted by the organization Recto-Verso, for two months, around themes related to digital art, for an exhibition curator and/or a French digital artist.


In order to allow the confrontation of different artistic points of view, to promote the establishment of lasting links between Quebec artists and writers and artists and writers from France, and to contribute to the development of the artistic approaches of these creators, CHRONIQUES has signed an agreement for the exchange of artists and residencies between Quebec and Marseilles in the field of digital arts, under the sponsorship of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

Within the framework of this exchange, a French curator or artist in digital arts will be able to benefit from a 2-month research and reflection period around themes related to digital art. The residency will take place in Quebec City (Quebec – Canada) at RECTO-VERSO, organizer of the Mois Multi. In return, a Quebec artist or curator will be welcomed in Marseille by CHRONIQUES.

GOALS

This cross-research residency has five objectives:

  • To support and stimulate the creators by providing them with an environment and appropriate means for the realization and the diffusion of their artwork.
  • To foster the renewal of artists and writers by giving them access to a new and stimulating cultural environment.
  • To allow the exchange of artistic or literary points of view and to contribute to the establishment of durable links between creators from Quebec and those from abroad.
  • To promote the work and career development of Quebec artists abroad.
  • Develop new networks for artistic creation, production and distribution.

Characteristics of the residency

Field concerned: Digital and hybrid arts, curating, visual art

Intended Candidates: Artists and/or curators with at least two years of artistic practice.

Duration of the stay and amount of the grant: The duration of the stay is two months, from January to February 2024. The amount of the grant is 5500 euros.

The place: RECTO-VERSO Productions is the place to express the mutations that agitate contemporary artistic practices by encouraging innovation and risk-taking. They support research, creation and dissemination of multidisciplinary arts. Active and committed to artists and the Quebec City community, RECTO-VERSO Productions works within a national and international network. A reference in the field of support for the creation and dissemination of avant-garde artistic practices, RECTO-VERSO Productions is a key link in a vast international network of contemporary art. Productions RECTO-VERSO produces and co-produces artworks that merge artistic practices, languages and processes based on scenic, sensory and technological experimentation, in addition to offering an artistic residency program focused on multidisciplinary research and creation. RECTO-VERSO Productions produces the Mois Multi, an international festival of multidisciplinary and electronic arts, which hosts and presents avant-garde productions by artists from Quebec, Canada and abroad.

Condition of reception : During the residency RECTO-VERSO, accommodation and a work space will be provided free of charge to the artists.

Eligibility

Profiles : Professional artists

Ineligibility:

  • A group legally incorporated as a company or partnership, whether formed for profit or not.
  • Projects carried out as part of a school program.
  • Incomplete applications.

Amount of the grant

The amount is 5,500 euros.

Expenses covered by the grant: The grant will cover the costs of personal insurance, travel, living expenses and project-related expenses. (The grant holder is responsible for booking his/her own transportation. It is the grant holder responsibility to obtain all the necessary documents for his/her stay abroad, including a visa when required by the host country. Applicants are not required to submit a detailed budget in support of their application.

Evaluation of the request

Criteria:

  • Quality of the artistic work
  • Interest and relevance of the project 
  • Project feasibility

Process: All applications are evaluated on their own merits, based on the objectives and evaluation criteria specific to the different components of the residency.

Response time: If the application is accepted, the applicant will receive a document with the announcement letter outlining the terms and conditions for the use of the award.

If the application is denied, the applicant will also receive the decision by email if possible.
