CHRONIQUES Production 2018
Over time, in the Veracruz region, the culture of the French farmers who came to try their luck during colonisation and that of the pre-Co- lumbian civilization have blended, leaving only traces of this past in the form of remains, regularly brought to the surface by the Rio Bobo River.
We hear the speech of these descendants, their rela- tionship to ancestors and paranormal phenomena, as their voices mingle with the songs of birds and images of the lands they inhabit. The film unveils itself thanks to a 3D scanner, which models everything using a immense number of tiny points. The scanner reveals three-di- mensional shapes. Some remain sketches but some are instantly recognizable: a human figure appears, as well as a car, and the branch of a banana tree.
TROPICS won the Golden Nica Price at the Ars Electronica Festival in 2018.

Mathilde Lavenne was born in 1982 in France. In 2011, she began focusing her approach on emerging techno- logies and using digital tools to making short films and interactive installations, and in 2014 received the Pierre Schaeffer Prize from the SCAM. She graduated in 2016 from Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporains.
Like archaeology, which borrows as much from the earth sciences as from the natural and human sciences, Mathilde Lavenne approaches travel from the angle of excavation, matter and wandering.
