CHRONIQUES Production 2018

In Tropics,Mathilde Lavenne offers us a trip to Mexico. On three screens,a film is projected, based on a dialogue with Mexicans working on a farm.

Over time, in the Veracruz region, the culture of the French farmers who came to try their luck during colonisation and that of the pre-Co- lumbian civilization have blended, leaving only traces of this past in the form of remains, regularly brought to the surface by the Rio Bobo River.

We hear the speech of these descendants, their rela- tionship to ancestors and paranormal phenomena, as their voices mingle with the songs of birds and images of the lands they inhabit. The film unveils itself thanks to a 3D scanner, which models everything using a immense number of tiny points. The scanner reveals three-di- mensional shapes. Some remain sketches but some are instantly recognizable: a human figure appears, as well as a car, and the branch of a banana tree.

TROPICS won the Golden Nica Price at the Ars Electronica Festival in 2018.
