CHRONIQUES, incubator of digital imagination, honors the artist Boris Labbé at the departmental cultural space – 21 bis, Mirabeau and at the Musée des Tapisseries in Aix-en-Provence. This monographic diptych illustrates the richness of his artistic career: from animation to video installation, through scenography and video mapping.

The Turbulent Infinite, a title, albeit borrowed from Michaux, which is oh so evocative of the experience of Boris Labbé’s work, resembles a little over ten years of the artist’s experience and audiovisual experimentation.

By combining the employment of digital moving image techniques as well as those characteristic of animation, the films and installations on show make up an original and ebullient language. They form a universe perpetually under (re) construction that carries inside it the event of its potential demise.

For his exhibition at the departmental cultural space – 21, bis Mirabeau, Boris Labbé proposes a journey that presents two of his first works of animation, Il(s) tourne(nt) en rond (2010) and Kyrielle (2011). These early works reveal the author’s themes and obsessions, developed later: a taste for the painting of the Flemish primitives but also a barely concealed affiliation with the classics of experimental animation, the invasion of space by characters, metamorphosis, a looped narrative.

Le Lac (2020) © Boris Labbé – Video images from the set design of Angelin Preljocaj’s “Swan Lake”, a piece for 26 dancers created in 2020.

In the gothic gallery of the Musée des Tapisseries, Boris Labbé proposes a recreation of the set design work done for choreographer Angelin Preljocaj in 2020: Swan Lake. The video installation, rearranged, reworked, re-sounded, keeps only the first part of the original title: The Lake. The videos show the primordial elements (water, smoke, clouds, birds, forest, architecture, a factory…) which are in permanent tension with each other. The landscapes, often of a great darkness, are at the same time hyper-realistic and hyper-artificial. They confront us with the virtuality of the world, which we feel is close to tipping over and which, perhaps, is only a simulation or a crazy construction.
